Species Info: The Hyasyn

What are Hyasyns?

Hyasyns are a species native to Blueport that possess the ability to survive both on land and in water. They are known as artisans, healers, and creatives. They are a Magica species and do not heavily rely on technology, but still utilize Magitech mostly on land. Their populations reside most commonly in the Mythic Lands.

What do Hyasyns Look Like?

Hyasyns in siren form possess a large tail to swim in water and a small tail used for reproduction. Their skintones are vibrant and colorful, with pigmentation, patterns, spots, and scales. The spot patterns on a Hyasyn may light up or glow, especially in the dark. They have large irises, small horns on their head and fish-like ears. Hyasyns in human form lose their large tail but keep all other features including their small tail.

    • Siren form and human form (created due to crossbreeding with human-like species, modern-day Hyasyns are not able to reproduce outside of their own species.)

    • Hyasyn colonies exist in the oceans. They are Magica societies and don’t utilize technology as often. The colonies spread from the land, the sea, to underground. Land parts of colonies are more tech-based.

Hyasyn Basic Information

  • Hyasyn colonies exist in the oceans. They are Magica societies and don’t utilize technology as often. The colonies spread from the land, the sea, to underground. Land parts of colonies are more tech-based.
  • Hyasyns reproduce asexually through a love ritual with their partner. After both partners place their shedded small tails together in a body of water, a baby Hyasyn will slowly form.
  • Hyasyns are not able to reproduce outside of their own species.
  • Each Hyasyn can reproduce twice in their lifetime. After their second child, they regrow their tale, yet it is infertile. This means that Hyasyns populate at a much slower rate than other species. Hyasyn deaths are taken very seriously and are avoided at all costs. Other species place conservation acts to protect Hyasyns from harm.
  • Historically, Hyasyns have been hunted by other species due to species discrimination and to use their skin and horns as high-quality materials.
  • Modern-day Hyasyns do not face deadly discrimination often, but some species, specifically land-locked ones, may still hold a prejudice to Hyasyns who live on land.
  • Land-Hyasyns or commonly known by the slang term, “Landsyn” (derogatory “Dirtscale”) is a Hyasyn who lives permanently on the land and does not belong or identify with a colony. Land Hyasyn communities are popular near coastal cities, especially South Florida, where the highest Land Hyasyn population resides.
  • Hyasyns communicate underwater with each other more commonly using sign language, vocal clicking, and through bioluminescent skin variation (BSV), which allows them to express emotions more accurately by changing the patterns, pigmentation, and brightness of their skin. This is also used to camouflage and protect themselves from deep sea predators. Hyasyns communicate vocally on land but still use BSV instinctively.
  • Hyasyns are naturally attoned to magic. Each Hyasyn possesses an innate ability to use magic such as healing, elemental, divination, and a sacred practice known as Vatnfeydr. Magic is not acquired through birth and must be taught at a young age, similar to language.
  • Hyasyns form symbiotic relationships with certain underwater creatures. They communicate often with other marine mammals and often form deep bonds with them.
  • Hyasyns host festivals during the summer and winter solstices.
  • Hyasyns have race variation within their species. In shallow-water colonies, Hyasyns are more vibrant and light in skintone. In deep-water colonies, they are more dark and dull, and have more visible bioluminescence.
  • Hyasyns use the ocean’s environment to craft unique artisan ceramics, sculptures, jewelry, tapestries, clothes, and trinkets. These are often exchanged and traded between colonies as a cultural tradition. Many trading markets are established near the borders of colonies that welcome travelers to exchange their crafts. Although Hyasyns enjoy the luxuries of modern-day Blueport, they still value the ancient traditions of their species.
  • The Hyasyn colonies are ruled by a democratic government. The leaders are a large group of elder Hyasyns known as the Marisage. The Marisage are also responsible for keeping wisdom and traditions. They play a crucial role in passing down Hyasyn customs to younger generations.
  • Hyasyns are responsible to heal and protect the ocean and its inhabitants.
  • Envoy Hyasyns are a class of Hyasyn that lives both on land and in water. They serve as diplomats between the colonies and land-societies. They are great mediators for cross-species relations.
