The joys of Old Skool Minecraft (and why let's plays should make a comback)
I recently started a Minecraft let’s play on my YouTube channel called “Old Skool Minecraft.“
The entire premise of the series was a good ol’ fashioned Minecraft let’s play. Bare bones editing, just pure gameplay and commentary. I wanted to lean into that nostalgic factor, so I installed a SUPER nostalgic Minecraft mod – More Creeps and Weirdos (Revival)
I was playing on version 1.12.2, so I could get a balance of fun nostalgic mods with some more “modern” features of the game, but still with that old school vibe.
There’s a lot more to the series besides just an older version and a fun mod. There’s facecam in every episode, an adorable texture pack, and a few other small nostalgic mods inside of a custom world with a mix of version 1.0 terrain generation!
Besides just the gameplay itself, one thing I really enjoy about this series is actually how simple it is. It’s like the 2010’s era of Minecraft YouTube – all there really was out there was those really simple let’s plays with a random person just playing the game and talking to their viewers for a good while. It’s till this day, my absolute favorite type of content to watch on YouTube. But what makes me sad is how rare it is to find those types of let’s plays nowadays. So as a solution, I decided to make those videos myself!
Even after doing so many awesome and fun projects on my channel like my 100 days series, I still really enjoy making a simple let’s play like Old Skool Minecraft. It’s seriously so much fun. I hope in the future, this genre on YouTube will pick back up again. I’d love to see more let’s plays like mine from small Minecraft creators in the present! And if you do know any creators like that, please do leave a comment on this post and let me know. :3
I never played Minecraft before, but it does seem like a fun game to play. I didn’t know you could mod it – the mods seem even more interesting! :D
